Abstract: For a finite field $F$, we are interested in the polynomials which induce permutations of $F$. Staring from the $F$-algebra formed by all functions over $F$, I observe a simple fact that every permutation takes the same role in this algebra. This fact is helpful for us to understand better some classical results on permutation polynomial including the Hermite criterion and Wan’s bound. We will give simplified and enlightening proof to them. We also improve the Hermite criterion in the case $F$ is a prime field.
